The short answer

The IBA BBA admission test gives you 30 English MCQs inside a 90-minute paper you also share with maths and analytical ability. Vocabulary appears as synonyms, antonyms, sentence completion and word usage. Around 800 to 1,000 words you can recall on demand covers almost everything the paper asks.

The phrase doing the work there is "recall on demand." Most candidates who miss the English cut-off have read more words than that. They cannot retrieve them at 11:20 in the morning with a clock running and a wrong answer costing marks.

What does the IBA BBA English section test?

IBA runs an aptitude test, not a syllabus test, so there is no official word list to finish. Based on past papers and published breakdowns from prep centres such as PIE Academy, the MCQ paper runs roughly 30 English questions, 30 maths and 15 to 20 analytical ability, with 90 minutes for all three. A 30-minute writing section follows. Shortlisted candidates then face a viva.

Two details matter more than the counts.

Every section carries its own pass mark. A strong maths score cannot rescue a weak English score. The Daily Star's guide to getting into IBA makes the same point and adds that the bar shifts each year with the difficulty of the paper.

Wrong answers cost you. The Daily Star puts the deduction at 0.2 marks per wrong MCQ. Some prep sources report 0.25. Either figure makes blind guessing on a vocabulary question a losing bet. That penalty is why half-knowing a word is worse than not knowing it. If you recognise "tenuous" but cannot separate it from "tenacious," you will pick one, get it wrong, and pay for it. The four shapes vocabulary takes on the paper

Only the first two are answerable from a flashcard. The last two need you to have seen the word doing a job inside a sentence. Memorising a two-word Bangla gloss and moving on leaves you stranded on half the paper.

How many words do you need?

Between 800 and 1,000, with sharp returns falling off after that. Word Smart 1, the book almost every IBA aspirant in Dhaka starts with, holds roughly 850 words. You will meet someone who claims 3,000. Ask them to define "ubiquitous" and use it in a sentence about traffic. The number people quote is the number they read, not the number they can produce.

An IBA alum writing at Road to IBA says he sat the BBA test with about 200 new words while classmates carried lists of 1,500, and still cleared it, because he knew his 200 cold. That is the trade you make every time you add a list instead of reviewing the one you have.

Why the words fall out three days later

You learn 30 words on Friday. By Wednesday you have maybe 8.

Nothing is wrong with you. Memory discards anything you have not needed twice. Hermann Ebbinghaus mapped this in 1885 and the shape has not changed since. What has changed is that we now know exactly when to come back.

Cepeda and colleagues synthesised 839 measurements across 317 experiments in Psychological Bulletin and found that spreading the same study minutes across more sessions beats packing them together, with the useful gap widening as your exam moves further out. Day 2, day 7, day 21, then monthly.

Computing that queue across 1,000 words is not something you can do on paper past a few hundred cards. What I did differently

I sat the IBA BBA 29th admission test and finished 2nd. Before that I set myself a challenge: master 800 words in seven days.

Three things made it work, and none of them was studying longer.

I reviewed on a schedule instead of by feel. Every word came back on day 2, then day 7, then day 21. Same total hours, spread differently.

I built a mnemonic for every word I kept failing, not for every word. Roughly 180 out of 800. Words I already half-knew went straight to sentence practice. The method I used is written up as the three-part mnemonic formula, with worked examples built out of Dhaka rather than borrowed from American GRE lists.

I cross-matched synonyms and antonyms in clusters. Learning "frugal, thrifty, parsimonious, miserly" together taught me the ladder between them. Learning them 400 pages apart would have given me four separate facts I would later confuse, which is exactly what IBA's near-miss answer choices are built to catch. A 60-day vocabulary plan for IBA BBA

Days 1 to 14, build the base

Twenty-five new words a day, five days a week. Do not chase difficulty. The IBA paper leans on mid-frequency words that appear in editorials, not the exotic tail of a GRE list. Give 15 minutes of each session to review, not to adding.

Days 15 to 35, add and review together

Hold 25 new words a day, but split your session evenly between new and old. You will reach roughly 600 to 650 words. This is where most candidates quit, because the new-word count slows while the review pile grows. It is also the stretch that decides your score.

This is also where a streak and a leaderboard stop being a gimmick. The problem in week four is not difficulty. It is that reviews feel like standing still, and something has to make you open the app on the night you do not want to.

Days 36 to 45, switch to questions

Stop adding. Solve sentence completion and synonym-antonym sets under a clock, six to eight minutes for ten questions. Every word you miss goes back into review with the sentence you missed it in.

Days 46 to 60, full-paper timing

Sit complete MCQ sections with negative marking applied. Target 30 English questions in 20 to 22 minutes so you can hand the spare time to maths. Track two numbers after each mock: how many you got wrong, and how many you left blank. If wrong answers heavily outnumber blanks, you are guessing too freely for a paper that punishes guesses.
